The start of Holgate Lane between the church and Central Garage on the High Street.
Note the old stone gatepost on the left at the entrance, probably C19th. Boston Spa has quite a collection of them, especially along the High Street.
The lane, with the modern church at the top, leads down through an ancient hollow-way to the 'Old Road to the Ford'. Holgate meant 'hollow street'.
This was used in medieval times and perhaps earlier, before the bridge was built in 1770.
The same view from the bottom of Holgate Lane seen in 1921 and 2008.
