Heritage Trail - Deep Dale Valley and Woodland Path

An information board has been installed at the top of the path by the road.  It includes some of our discoveries as well as an explanation of the geology underlying this area.

Deep Dale valley and woodland path, an ancient route down to the River Wharfe, formed originally by glacial melt-water.

Wood anemones (to the left) indicate possible ancient woodland.

The woodland has been managed in modern times.  It is thought to have been felled and replanted around the time of World War 1.  It was thinned in 2010 to allow more light to reach the woodland floor.

The stream flowing through Deep Dale was culverted under the field immediately to the south and drains the 'dry valley' on the south west.  The dark marks of the natural drainage lines can be seen on the Google aerial photograph.  You will find the Deep Dale woodland labelled as Field 96 on the Field Names Map on Site 5 of the trail.
