Heritage Trail - Rock Carvings - Jackdaw Crag

This is an old photograph of carvings in the overhanging rocks by the river at Jackdaw Crag.  Some have eroded away since it was taken.  If you look at this picture of the rock face carefully, you can see a number of carved figures.  To the left there is a fox and mounted huntsman and to the right are several heads.

It is thought that the hunting subjects were done by 1st World War soldiers stationed nearby.  It is not known whether others, like the heads, are earlier, as the tradition of carving 'Celtic heads' was revived in later times.  Sadly some carvings have been graffitied recently.
